Emergency Response and Life Support Policy
Emergency Response and Life Support Policy – Prime Care Home
Prime Care Home is a non-medical care facility and does not perform advanced medical resuscitation procedures.
Our responsibility is to respond immediately, protect life within our scope, respect residents’ wishes,
and ensure fast access to licensed medical professionals.
In all emergency situations, staff must immediately contact:
-
Emergency medical services (ambulance)
-
The on-call nurse or doctor
If there is NO DNR order on file:
Staff must act to preserve life within their non-medical role by:
-
Calling emergency services immediately
-
Contacting the on-call nurse or doctor
-
Providing basic first response only, such as:
-
Checking breathing and responsiveness
-
Keeping the airway clear
-
Ensuring the resident is safe and comfortable
-
Staying with the resident until medical help arrives
-
Staff must NOT:
-
Perform advanced CPR
-
Give injections or medications
-
Carry out medical resuscitation procedures
Licensed medical professionals will take over upon arrival.
In simple terms:
No DNR = Call ambulance + give basic support + wait for doctors
If there IS a valid DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order signed by a doctor and the family:
Staff must:
-
Respect the DNR order fully
-
NOT attempt any resuscitation
-
Provide comfort, dignity, and calm support
-
Contact the on-call doctor
-
Inform the family immediately
In simple terms:
With DNR = No resuscitation + comfort care + call doctor and family
